Team Name Generator

Short, classroom-safe team names for review games, stations and group projects, from 2 to 12 teams at a time. Free, no sign-up, nothing to install.

How to Name Your Class Teams

Pick a theme and the number of teams in the team name generator above, and it gives you that many short, classroom-safe names, such as "The Brave Otters." At Chalkbox, we build free classroom tools for teachers who need something that works before the next class. You can re-roll any one team's name without touching the rest of the list.

The team name generator is free, needs no account and runs in your browser with nothing to install. Six steps get you from a blank screen to a printed list:

  1. Set Number of teams. Choose anything from 2 to 12. It starts at 4.
  2. Pick a Theme. The choices are Animals, Space, Science, Math, Sports, Colors, Books & stories and Mixed. Animals is the default.
  3. Pick a Grade band. K-5 is the default and uses simpler adjectives. The 6-12 band uses bolder ones.
  4. Press New names for a fresh list covering every team.
  5. Press ↻ New beside one team to replace only that team's name and keep the others.
  6. Press Copy list or Print. Copy list copies the names one per line and shows "Copied!" Print prints only the list, under the title "Our Team Names."

Set the three controls before you start re-rolling single names. Changing the number of teams, the theme or the grade band makes a fresh list, and that replaces any names you had already decided to keep.

Every name follows the same pattern: "The," then an adjective, then a word from the theme. A K-5 Animals list for four teams might read:

  • The Brave Otters
  • The Speedy Falcons
  • The Jolly Pandas
  • The Clever Owls

A 6-12 Space list for four teams might read:

  • The Quantum Comets
  • The Electric Rockets
  • The Stellar Nebulas
  • The Supersonic Astronauts

No two teams in one list share the same themed word. Two teams will never both be the Otters in the same list.

What Makes a Good Classroom Team Name

A good classroom team name is short, easy to say aloud, fair to everyone on the team and tied to what the class is studying. Names from the team name generator start with "The" and come from fixed word lists written for classrooms. Use these checks when you read a list over:

  • Say each name out loud once. If you plan to call names during a review game, read the list aloud before you hand it out. If a name trips your tongue, press ↻ New on that team.
  • Keep the name about the whole team. If a name could be read as pointing at one student, press ↻ New on that team.
  • Watch for local meanings. If a name happens to match a student's nickname or a running class joke, re-roll it before anyone sees the list.
  • Match the subject. A math review with The Clever Fractions and The Lucky Polygons puts the topic into every call you make.

Matching the Team Name Generator Theme to Your Unit

The fastest way to choose a theme is to match it to the lesson the teams are working on. Some pairings to start from:

  • Math for a math review: Fractions, Polygons, Exponents, Prime Numbers.
  • Science for lab groups or a science unit: Atoms, Magnets, Fossils, Volcanoes.
  • Space for a unit on the solar system: Comets, Rockets, Astronauts, Nebulas.
  • Books & stories for reading groups or a writing lesson: Bookworms, Wordsmiths, Page Turners, Wizards.
  • Sports for gym class or a game-day review: Strikers, Sprinters, All-Stars, MVPs (most valuable players).
  • Colors when teams sit at colored tables or hold colored cards: Golds, Teals, Emeralds, Sapphires.
  • Animals when the subject does not matter: Owls, Tigers, Pandas, Otters, Falcons.
  • Mixed for a review that covers several subjects, since it draws the themed word from every theme.

The words above are a sample from each theme's list. Press New names a few times to see what a theme gives you before you commit.

K-5 or 6-12 Adjectives

The grade band setting decides which adjectives go in front of the themed word.

Grade bandExample adjectivesExample name
K-5 (default)Mighty, Happy, Brave, Speedy, Clever, Jolly, Lucky, FriendlyThe Brave Otters
6-12Unstoppable, Electric, Legendary, Quantum, Turbo, Stellar, Atomic, SupersonicThe Quantum Comets

Pick K-5 if you want simpler adjectives. Pick 6-12 if you want bolder words. The band is a setting you choose, so a fifth-grade class that wants The Turbo Rockets can have them.

Ways to Use Team Names in Class

Named teams give you something to call out in any activity where the class splits into groups. Start with the groups themselves: split the class with the random group generator, then set Number of teams here to match and press New names.

  • Review games. Name the teams before a Jeopardy game so you can say "Speedy Falcons, your pick" in place of "Group 3." Keep points for each named team on the classroom scoreboard, and add the classroom buzzer for quick-answer rounds.
  • Stations. Post each group's name at its first station. Run the station rotation timer and call each group by name when it is time to move.
  • Lab groups. If you need group names for students at lab tables, the Science theme gives labels like The Clever Magnets that you can write on worksheets and trays.
  • House points over a term. Pick names once, print the list and post it where you tally points. The team name generator does not save lists between visits, so the printed "Our Team Names" sheet becomes your record.

If the new teams need a warm-up before they work together, the team building activities guide collects activities to try.

Letting Teams Pick from a Few Options

To let teams choose their own name, give each team two or three options from the team name generator and let each team pick. The generator has no voting, so run the choice on the board:

  1. Press ↻ New on one team and write the name on the board.
  2. Press ↻ New again for a second option, and once more for a third. Each press replaces the name on screen, so write each one down before the next press.
  3. Repeat for every team, then let each team pick from its own options by a show of hands.
  4. Before you lock in the names, check that no two teams picked the same themed word.

Do the check in step 4 by hand. The team name generator keeps themed words unique within the list on screen, but an option you wrote down earlier can use a word another team also has.

A faster version uses whole lists. Press New names three times, write each list on the board and let teams claim names in turn. Cross off a themed word as soon as one team claims it, so the Owls only appear once.

What the Team Name Generator Does Not Do

The team name generator makes a quick list of names and has four limits. Each one has a workaround:

  • Fixed word lists. Every name comes from word lists written for classrooms. Nothing is generated by artificial intelligence and nothing is sent anywhere. The team name generator does not take custom words, so press Copy list, paste the names into your slides or notes and edit any name there.
  • No voting. Students cannot vote inside the team name generator. Use the board method above or a show of hands.
  • No saved lists. Lists are gone after you leave the page. Press Copy list to paste the names somewhere you keep, or press Print for a paper copy titled "Our Team Names."
  • No outside check. Names are not checked against other schools. If your teams will play another class, compare the two lists before the game and re-roll any repeat.

If you want students to invent names from scratch, such as a team named after the school mascot, skip the generator and brainstorm on the board. For classroom team names you need before the activity starts, set Number of teams to match your groups, pick a theme and press New names in the team name generator above.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good team name for a group of kids?

A good team name for kids is short, easy to say aloud and tied to what the class is doing, such as "The Brave Otters" or "The Clever Fractions." Set the grade band to K-5 in the generator above for simpler adjectives like Happy, Speedy and Friendly. Then pick a theme that matches your lesson.

Are the team names safe for school?

Yes. Every name comes from fixed word lists written for classrooms, so the team name generator only combines "The," a classroom adjective and a themed word. Nothing is generated by artificial intelligence, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I change just one team's name?

Yes. Press the ↻ New button beside that team, and only that team's name changes while the rest of the list stays put. Changing the number of teams, the theme or the grade band makes a whole new list, so set those three controls first.

How many team names can it make at once?

The team name generator makes 2 to 12 names at once, one per team, and starts at 4. No two teams in the same list share a themed word, so a list of 12 Animals names will not give two teams the Otters.

Can I print or save the team names?

You can print or copy the names, but the team name generator does not save lists between visits. Print sends only the list to the printer, titled "Our Team Names." Copy list puts the names on your clipboard, one per line, so you can paste them into slides or a document.
