Claude plan prices for students, checked in October 2026, and how a university Claude for Education account works.
Claude does not offer an individual student discount for its paid plans. In the guides we publish at Chalkbox, we gather every figure directly from primary sources, and our review of Anthropic records in October 2026 shows no dedicated student rate for Claude Pro. Individual learners must pay the standard consumer price or rely on the free tier.
Anthropic's help article adds that it occasionally runs limited-time promotions announced through official channels, and the Claude pricing page listed no student price or student offer in October 2026. Students who need access to Claude have two practical choices: use the zero-dollar public plan, or check whether their college participates in an institutional contract.
Prices and platform policies change without notice. We recommend verifying current plan details on Anthropic's website before making a purchase.
Claude offers three main service levels for individual consumers: Free, Pro, and Max. The free plan costs $0 and is open to anyone. It lets you chat on web, desktop, and mobile devices. It also supports web searches, file creation, code execution, conversation memory, tool connections, and artifacts. Free users can access Sonnet and Haiku models and manage up to 5 projects. Free access does not include Opus, deep research, or Claude Code.
| Plan | Price | Billing | Usage and Models | Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | None | Sonnet, Haiku | Chat, web search, files, code execution, memory, tools, artifacts, up to 5 projects |
| Pro | $20 / mo | Monthly | At least 5x usage per 5-hour session, more models | Everything in Free, plus Claude Code, Claude Design, Slides, Docs, Claude Science |
| Pro (Annual) | $17 / mo | Billed $200 up front | Same as Pro | Same as Pro |
| Max 5x | $100 / mo | Monthly | 5x usage of Pro, higher output limits | Early feature access, priority traffic access |
| Max 20x | $200 / mo | Monthly | 20x usage of Pro, higher output limits | Early feature access, priority traffic access |
Claude Pro costs $20 per month on a monthly billing cycle, or $17 per month when paid annually. Paying annually requires $200 billed up front. Twelve monthly payments of $20 total $240, so the $200 annual bill saves $40. It also adds Claude Code, Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Pro users get at least five times more usage per 5-hour session than Free users.
Beyond Pro, Anthropic offers Max tiers for heavy workloads. Anthropic's Max plan support article lists Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200 a month. Max plans are billed on a monthly cycle. They provide priority access during high-traffic windows and higher output limits.
Students can sometimes obtain subsidized or institution-funded access through higher education agreements. Anthropic sells an Education tier that institutions purchase directly. Anthropic describes this as "a specialized version of Claude tailored for higher education institutions".
If your university buys this plan, you sign in with your university email; Anthropic does not publish what, if anything, students pay. The institutional program includes academic research features and a learning mode. Learning mode functions like a tutor, asking guided questions rather than printing instant solutions. Universities named on the Claude higher education solutions page include Northeastern University, Champlain College, London School of Economics, Dartmouth, and the University of Virginia.
To check whether your school is covered, sign in to Claude with your university email, as Anthropic's university access guide describes, or ask your school's IT help desk whether it has a Claude for Education plan. Educational license administrators can discuss institution-wide pricing on the Claude contact sales page. Institutional pricing details are not published.
Outside institutional site licenses, Anthropic operates the Claude Campus Program. This initiative recruits student ambassadors across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral tracks. Selected ambassadors receive a $3,600 cash stipend for running campus builder clubs or workshops. However, the page says "The program is closed for Fall 2026." The campus program page does not offer free Claude Pro or an individual student discount.
Claude Pro makes sense only if you regularly run out of Free usage within a 5-hour session. Pro gives at least 5x the Free usage per session and adds Claude Code, so it fits students who code with Claude or work in long sessions. A computer science major using Claude to debug software projects or review syntax can benefit from Claude Code.
If you rarely run out of Free usage within a 5-hour session, Pro adds little for you. Writing outlines, drafting study summaries, or formatting bibliographies fits easily within the free allowance. Spending $20 per month over an eight-month academic year totals $160.

Software tools cannot replace personal learning and original scholarship. Anthropic's support article says Claude should not be used to complete assignments you are expected to do independently. Submitting raw model outputs as personal academic work violates institutional honor codes.
Always follow your course syllabus regarding artificial intelligence. When instructors permit software assistance, document your prompts and maintain draft histories to prove original effort. Using Claude to brainstorm paper outlines or explain dense concepts builds comprehension. Using Claude to generate entire essays circumvents learning.
Our verdict would change if Anthropic launched an individual student price for Claude Pro, or if the Pro price dropped. For now, the lack of an individual student discount means most students should remain on the free tier.
Ask your department whether it already provides Claude access for your courses. If your campus lacks an agreement, use the Free plan on your own coursework before deciding to spend your own money.

No, Claude does not have a standard student discount for individual users. Anthropic's Pro plan help article states that Anthropic does not offer standard discounted pricing for any paid plans. Students can use the Free plan, or a Claude for Education account if their university buys one.
Yes, Claude is free for students through the standard Free plan available to everyone. It costs $0 and includes access to web search, file creation, code execution, artifacts, memory across conversations, and up to 5 projects. If your university buys Claude for Education, you sign in with your university email; Anthropic does not publish what, if anything, students pay.
As of October 2026 on claude.com/pricing, Claude Pro costs $20 per month if billed monthly, or $17 per month with an annual subscription billed as $200 up front. These prices do not include applicable sales tax.
Yes, you can get Claude through your school if your institution purchases Claude for Education. Under that program, eligible students, faculty, and staff sign in using their university email address to access campus-provided features.
Claude Pro is worth it only if you regularly exhaust the Free plan limits within a single 5-hour session. Pro provides at least five times more usage per session and adds Claude Code, making it practical for heavy coding workloads or extended research blocks. For standard coursework tasks, the Free tier remains sufficient.
